How people in India’s top 53 cities travel to work

Mode of Transport
Distance to Work
Gender

Notes:
1. For easier readability of the data, we combined Census categories in ‘mode of transport’. So, ‘public transport’ combines 4 Census categories (tempo/auto rickshaw/taxi, bus, train and water transport); and ‘private’ combines 2 Census categories (moped/scooter/motorcycle and car/jeep/van).
2. The 53 cities presented here each have a population above 1 million, as per Census 2011. Since the data presented for them is their corresponding district-level data, there will be a slight variance in boundaries.
3. The data represents commuting habits and distance travelled by 'Other workers', who in the census are those who are not engaged in household industry or agricultural occupations
